Can the Security/Insecurity balance change from moment to moment?

Yes. InnerVoice describes the Security/Insecurity balance as a changing relationship, not a permanent personality label. New situations, information and experience can shift which voice has more influence. Balance means letting confidence and useful caution work together, not removing doubt or staying confident all the time.

Yes. In the InnerVoice framework, your Security/Insecurity balance can change from moment to moment as situations change. You can feel ready one minute, uncertain the next, then steady again after learning something new. That shift does not mean you have become a different person.

Think of answering a call. You pick up happily, then hear, “We need to talk.” Suddenly, your mind starts guessing. A few seconds later, the caller explains that they need help choosing a birthday gift. Your shoulders drop. Same phone. Same you. Different meaning.

What is the Security/Insecurity balance?

The Security/Insecurity balance is the changing relationship between two underlying dynamics that InnerVoice names Security and Insecurity. InnerVoice proposes that this balance is foundational to every human emotion, with emotional experiences emerging from and being shaped by it.

Security means a sense of enough safety, familiarity, stability or ability to handle what is happening. Insecurity means a sense that something is uncertain, unsafe, unfamiliar or beyond your ability to manage. These labels are broader than everyday confidence or low self-esteem.

Through the inner-voice lens, the Voice of Security might say, “I can work this out.” The Voice of Insecurity might answer, “But what if you've missed something?” They are interacting perspectives, not two separate people inside you. You may notice words, images, feelings or a mix; not everyone's thinking sounds like a spoken conversation.

What can shift the balance within seconds?

In the InnerVoice model, the balance can shift when new information changes your sense of safety, ability or control. The situation may change, or your understanding of the same situation may change.

You're explaining an idea at work. You know the material, and the Voice of Security has room to guide you: “This is clear. Keep going.” Then someone frowns. The Voice of Insecurity jumps in: “They think this is wrong.” You speed up and lose your place.

Then the person says, “Sorry, the screen is hard to read.” That small fact changes your reading of the moment. You adjust the display and return to your point. The frown was real; your first explanation of it was only a guess.

Neither voice has vanished. Their influence has moved. Like adjusting the hot and cold taps, a small change can alter the whole experience.

Why can you feel secure in one setting and insecure in another?

Your Security/Insecurity balance depends on the setting, so skill and ease in one area do not guarantee the same balance everywhere. Familiar tasks and unfamiliar challenges can bring out different responses.

You might calmly handle a busy kitchen, juggling hot pans and timing dinner, yet hesitate over a message to someone you like. In the kitchen, you know what to do when something goes wrong. With the message, you cannot know how the other person will respond.

Even a familiar setting can change. Cooking your usual meal feels manageable until a guest mentions a serious food allergy. More caution now makes sense. Calling yourself “an insecure person” misses that detail. A more useful question is, “What feels uncertain here, right now?”

Does balance mean the Voice of Security should always lead?

Balance does not mean maximum Security or the absence of Insecurity. InnerVoice's aim is an appropriate relationship between both voices, because confidence can enable action and caution can help you correct course.

Imagine putting up a shelf. The Voice of Security says, “You've done this before.” Useful. The Voice of Insecurity says, “Check what's behind the wall before drilling.” Also useful. Ignoring that warning is not balance; it is confidence outrunning care.

On the other hand, imagining every possible mistake could keep the shelf in its box forever. A balanced response gives caution a job: check the wall, choose suitable fixings, then proceed. We do not need one voice to win. We need both to contribute.

How do the Five Transformations fit this ongoing change?

InnerVoice proposes that the Five Transformations, or 5TFM, describe the foundational process people use to navigate this ongoing dynamic. The Transformations are sequential and cumulative, but they are not a ladder you finish once.

Their endpoint, Befriend your Inner Voice, means working with both voices rather than destroying either one. A new challenge brings another chance to apply that relationship. With practice, the process may happen quickly and habitually; in a difficult situation, you may need more time and conscious attention.

For your next sudden shift, try asking, “What changed, and what is each voice contributing?” Perhaps you need a missing fact, a useful check or one manageable action. The goal is not to hold one feeling forever. It is to meet the next moment with a response that fits.
